More than $3.48 million worth of grants have been awarded to councils across Victoria under the Public Safety Infrastructure Fund program.

The grants program, which is part of the Victorian Government’s Community Crime Prevention Program, supports the development of public safety and security infrastructure to improve community safety and confidence in public places.

The grants will fund 20 projects led by 20 Victorian councils following a competitive application process.

Recognising the important role environment design plays in reducing opportunities for crime, the projects focus on activating spaces to encourage community use and minimise anti-social behaviour. The grants assist councils to change environments around their communities to enhance public safety and security and encourage legitimate community use.

The types of projects chosen to receive funding include the installation of CCTV and lighting systems, landscaping and streetscape works, improved amenity and various urban design initiatives to improve natural surveillance and perceptions of safety.
