The Project

Local governments will be better placed to support migrant women and those from multicultural communities with the release of the Safe Spaces Report and practical toolkits to improve safety and inclusion in public places.

The Safe Spaces Report and toolkits are available for councils across the state to strengthen the management of public spaces.

Funded by the Crime Prevention Innovation Fund, the report and toolkits were developed by Monash University, in partnership with Griffith University and the University of Sydney, in close collaboration with Monash, Melton and Wyndham city councils.

They provide a blueprint on how to better engage with migrant women using walking interviews, community safety surveys and co-design strategies to help ensure public places are as safe and inclusive as possible.

The report and toolkits were produced by the Feeling Safe in Public Places project, which worked to strengthen understanding of issues impacting safety and inclusion for migrant women from diverse backgrounds by analysing elements of public spaces that lead to worry about crime.

The project was funded by a $296,994 investment as part of the first round of the Crime Prevention Innovation Fund.
