Young people from Melbourne’s Chin community will kick start the school holidays with huge serves of fun, thanks to a series of soccer and volleyball programs funded by the Victorian Government.

The Western Melbourne Chin Community received $5000 to deliver the programs, with up to 500 young people from Chin communities across western metro Melbourne expected to take part.

The program will:

  • teach young people important life skills through sport
  • allow young people to learn about their culture and values in a positive way
  • offer safe places for social interaction, and
  • help build resilience and the ability to tackle challenges.

The aim is to promote inclusion and unity among young people from all Chin communities across western metropolitan Melbourne.

Since 2011 the Western Melbourne Chin Community has worked to empower the broader Chin community through sporting programs and homework clubs for children. This creates a safe and supportive environment to develop positive attitudes towards their learning and education.

The funding forms part of a broader investment of $270,000 for 24 targeted programs that will see more than 1,400 young people participate in culturally appropriate activities, as part of the delivery of Victoria’s Crime Prevention Strategy.
