The Youth Crime Prevention Grants fund community-led initiatives that address offending behaviour and recidivism by young people aged 10 to 24 years who have had contact with, or are at risk of involvement with, the criminal justice system.

Directed grants

The following 8 initiatives originated through a direct grant in 2017. All initiatives continue to deliver services and supports to prevent youth offending in their local government area.

Barwon South West

LGA: Greater Geelong

 

Project: Reignite Geelong

This project is a collaborative community response targeting a group of high risk, recidivist offenders aged 13 to 18 years.

Gippsland

LGA: Latrobe

 

Project: ReBoot

This is an early intervention project providing intensive support to young people aged 10 to 14 years with a demonstrated risk of engaging with the criminal justice system or with current engagement in low-level offending.

Grampians

LGA: Ballarat

 

Project: Ballarat Youth Crime Prevention Project

This project provides intensive support young people aged 10 to 17 years by bringing together the case workers they have had involvement with as part of a Multi-Agency Support Team.

Hume

LGA: Hume

 

Project: Broadmeadows Community Youth Justice Alliance

This project targets highly vulnerable young people, including high-risk recidivists living in, or near, the Banksia Gardens Public Housing Estate.

Project: Change It Up: Wyndham

This project provides intensive support services to young people aged 16 to 24 years and their families to create a pathway away from offending.

South East Metropolitan

LGA: Casey and Greater Dandenong

 

Project: PIVOT Casey and Dandenong Youth Crime Prevention projects

These projects provide tailored support across both locations for young people aged 14 to 22 years who have been identified as serious or recidivist offenders through a 3-phase approach.

LGA: Frankston

 

Project: PIVOT Frankston Youth Crime Prevention Project

This project provides intensive support to 20 young people aged 12 to 21 years and their families through a dedicated ‘advocate’.

Competitive grants

The following 7 initiatives originated through a competitive grant process in 2017. These initiatives continue to deliver services and supports to prevent youth offending in their local government area. An additional 3 initiatives were funded through this competitive stream in Cardinia, Darebin and Wodonga between 2017 and 2019.

Gippsland

LGA: East Gippsland

 

Project: Gippsland engaged mentoring service for crime prevention

This partnership project expands an existing mentoring program to young people aged 10–24 years who have had, or are at risk of having, involvement with the criminal justice system in East Gippsland.

Grampians

LGA: Horsham

 

Project: Connecting the service puzzle for youth at risk – outreach to mentoring

The Centre for Participation is leading the development of a coordinated framework for identifying, engaging with and providing linked services to highly vulnerable young people aged 10 to 24 years. The outreach and youth mentoring program provides flexible case management support and planning.

Hume

LGA: Greater Shepparton

 

Project: OutTeach

This project provides a youth worker and teacher to work two-on-one with young people aged 10 to 24 years from a mobile classroom.

Loddon Mallee

LGA: Greater Bendigo

 

Project: Second Chance

Job agency CVGT Australia is leading a partnership of agencies to provide a diversionary health, education and employment support program in the municipality of Greater Bendigo.

LGA: Mildura

 

Project: Mildura Youth Commitment Program

A consortium led by Sunraysia Community Health Services provides intensive, wrap-around case management support to reduce risk factors and enhance protective factors for young people aged 10 to 14 years at significant risk of becoming involved with the criminal justice system, and their families.

North West Metropolitan

LGA: Brimbank

 

Project: Youth Umbrella Project (YUP)

This project provides a range of targeted interventions to reduce risk and increase resilience for disadvantaged CALD young people aged 12–24 years in Brimbank.

LGA: Melton

 

Project: UTURN 193

This project provides sporting activities, case management and wilderness activities to Sudanese young people aged 10 to 24 years who are experiencing vulnerabilities and have had contact with the criminal justice system.

 Koori grants

Dedicated funding of $1.5 million was allocated to 25 Koori youth crime prevention activities in 2016-17.
